A month ago, we asked whether you would be willing to pay $10 per month for an additional issue of the MSJ called the MSJ Extra! (we currently publish every other week). We were blown away with your responses. More than 600 registered opinions, and 542 said “yes” to this plan.
So, here’s what will happen next:
Beginning January 4, we will publish weekly on Thursdays.
The flagship MSJ will remain free to all subscribers and be sent every other week.
Paying subscribers will also receive the MSJ Extra! on “off weeks.” Our listings of local investment opportunities will move into the MSJ Extra!, and we will add interviews and other features as well (though we’ll place short summaries of these in MSJ the following week).
Starting in this issue, you will find a subscribe button below that will take you to Substack to add your payment details. (You can revert to “free” whenever you want.)
We will continue to engage MSJ Extra! subscribers to ensure we deliver exactly the information you want and need.
Now, to the real news. In our featured articles this week:
How small credit unions are serving targeted markets in distressed communities.
The story of the Artisans Cooperative, which is trying to outcompete Etsy (a publicly traded company) with a stakeholder platform owned by participating artists (300 are participating already).
Cutting-edge strategies for increasing black homeowners by, for example, creating funds that help underwrite their down payments.
How the Industrial Commons is trying to bring the employee-ownership model of Mondragon, Spain, to Western North Carolina with a 40,000 square-foot Innovation Campus and more.
New ideas for bolstering independent, brick-and-mortar retail, such as Meantime’s kits for filling vacant commercial properties with pop-up stores.
And amazing statistics about fast-expanding worker-owned enterprises in the United Kingdom. These firms are 8-12% more productive than their privately owned counterparts.
Don’t forget to check out the latest listings of local investment opportunities. And please sign up now for the MSJ Extra! now:
