If you favor diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices and policies—as I do (with qualifications)—this has been a dismal week. In the last few days, executive orders from the Trump White House have put all employees associated with federal DEI programs on administrative leave and their offices dismantled. All of this is happening at a time when inequality in the United States has reached its highest levels in fifty years.
What short-sighted public leadership cannot dismantle, however, are private initiatives that focus on communities of color. And a great example is Potlikker Capital, which provides a combination of grants and loans to BIPOC farmers, ranchers, and agricultural managers. This week’s interview—for our paying subscribers—is with the co-founder of Potlikker Capital, Mark Watson.
According to Mark’s website, “Potlikker is a part of Southern cuisine known for its rich flavor and nutritional value. In addition to its culinary uses, potlikker has also played an important cultural role in the South. It symbolizes resilience and resourcefulness in African American culture.” As you’ll see, the term is a perfect metaphor for the mission of Mark’s fund.
